This is a methodology that aims to create understanding and inclusion between youth groups from different cultures/conflict zones. It is based on online and face-face dialogue, joint learning and joint creation.


To offer educators, trainers, NGO directors and other stackholders a new tool that can reduce hate, racism and diminish negative images between groups in conflict. "Groups in conflict" in this case refers to refugees and local residents of a certain city/state. The overarching goal should be to create understanding between both sides that can allow them to coexist in the same space. 


There are several methodologies:1. Ongoing online facilitated dialogue via a closed social media group. Participants will join a Facebook/Whatsapp group and engage in a facilitated-structured process of conflict transformation. They will go through several phases that include: exposure to each other's needs/grievances, understanding and development of mutual empathy and finding shared interests. This process is based on clinical psychology model called Cognitive Behavioral Treatment. The online element is crucial to achieve an effective process since it allows better "ventilation", helps acheive power balance, continuation and participation. 2. Joint learning: Participants learn the basics of conflict management through online/onsite lectures. By learning the participants will be able to better understand the process they are going through as well as act as facilitators in their own communities and help increase scalability.3. Face-face dialgoue and discussion - in addition to the ongoing online dialogue, participants will meet and have a face-face dialogue in which they will reflect the expereince and jointly plan their projects4. Simulation - For the tool fair iteslf - to best understand and deliver the concept and methodology, tool fair participants will engage in a simulation in which they role-play different actors in the "refugee crisis" - the refugees, local residents, NGO's staff and donors. Through the simulation ( that will occur online and onsite) tool fair participants will acknowledge the challenges of the topic and of the tool itself.

 see detailed explenation in "methodology" sectionFor the tool fair - Participants will engage in online dialogue BEFORE tool time, then will engage in a guided simulation that portray's real life dialgoue between a group of refugees and local residents. The simulation will include all elements of the tool detailed before.

Materials and resources: 

Participants should have a Facebook/Whatsapp accounts and be available for communication. (In the tool fair itself, participants who will select to participate in the simulation should be available for communication a few days in advance)


There are two types of outcomes:Psychological change within participants' views and attitudes
Tangible projects that participants create to increase scalability and outreach (depended on reaching the first outcome)Participants should understand the basics of conflict management and mediation and will be able to conduct basic mediation themselves. They should also have a better undestanding of the different cultures, their needs, concerns and hopes.Finally, they should be motivated and equiped with the right tools to continue and deliver the lessons they learned to others. In practical terms, a strong network of skilled and motivated leaders will be ready to work together and implement positive change toward peaceful coexistence in the same space.Possible end projects could include (based on previous experiences): A joint Facebook page telling personal stories, joint sports groups, website to promote inner community cooperaiton and more...


The tool could achieve great outcomes but requires quite a lot of preperation and resources as it includes several elements and dimensions. It is essential to have expereinced facilitators and that participants have access to social media. In addition, in any conflict situation, the outcomes cannot be guaranteed and depends on the political situation and organizational capacities. 

Notes for further use: 

This tool has already been used in practice. I would like to implmenet it during the Malta tool fair and have participants participate in it - in the online and onsite partsIt is important to note that for implemenation in the tool fair, the online part must being a few days before the "tool time" simulation.
