A rapid study of gender roles within the social context. The activity is part of a larger learning experience/ debate on gender roles and gender equality. It is divided in two parts:
The first is preparing the salad by teams of women and men, separately. The second comprising of discussions and debriefing of the process.

Aim: 

To create a condition that support young people in international youth exchanges to reflect on gender roles in the society.

Methodology: 

Simulation aiming at reaching awareness towards gender equality.

Step by step process: 

05m- Activity explanation
Participants are requested to create a salad with a focus on taste and appearance (presentation).

10m- Activity simulation
Participants create their salad according to guidelines using ingredients they recieve. They also act as judges for other groups to determine and grade taste and appearance.

15m- Debriefing questions:
- What happened during the salad preparation work?
- Were you satisfied with your role?
- Is this the role you usually assume at your home environment? (if no: how different it is and why one thinks so.)
- What would be an ideal situation?
- What would you learn from this?

Materials and resources: 

Ingredients for preparing a salad and utensils. No pre-written salad recipe.

Outcomes: 

Participants experience a taster about gender equality discourse.

Notes for further use: 

Daily activities of young people could replace the cooking example (for examples, football playing, tyre-changing..etc).
