Working about stereotypes and minorities using Turkey as a study case where 47 minorities live together.

Aim: 

Participants work on stereotypes and minorities.

Step by step process: 

Working groupsBalanced groups of 5 participants (3 Meda and 2 Europe). 
Participants are asked what and how much they know about Turkey’s reality. The groups discuss about Turkey’s current situation for 15 min. in terms of minorities, their rights and problems considering:
•Geography (Neighbour countries);
•Heritage from Ottoman Empire;
•Politics;
•Membership of European Union;
•Minorities (religious, linguistic, and ethnic);Plenary sharingThe groups present, very shortly, what they had about Turkey in the plenary. Each group has 3 minutes maximum. If the groups find the same things, they do not repeat them in the presentation.Power Point Presentation (see Documents/Handouts)Giving a general view about minorities in Turkey plus some maps on Turkish minorities. The presentation was enriched with ethnic music, pictures and videos from ritual ceremonies.

Materials and resources: 

Flipchart and markers.

Outcomes: 

This presentation allows participants to get an idea about the minorities and their problems. 

Notes for further use: 

This presentation can be a source for the participants to introduce a simulation game where participants act as minorities (ethnic groups) existing in Turkey.
