Young People build awareness about themselves and find out, that they do not only belong to only one social Group (like nationality) but to various kinds of Groups with people having similar Backgrounds, interests, talents and more .....

Aim: 

Young People should build awareness about themselves and find out, that they do not only belong to only one social Group (like nationality) but to various kinds of Groups with people having similar Backgrounds, interests, talents and more .....

Methodology: 

discovery based learning, problem based learning

Step by step process: 

The whole program carried out with participants in educational Setting will last about 3 1/2 to 4 hours.

Step 1) Brainstorming “identity”
Step 2) Participants (in the following abbreviated as “part.”) are invited to choose at least 6, maximum 10 different labels, on which they can read terms like: son, daughter, swimmer, biker, babysitter, heterosexual, bisexual, outdoor fan, online player, sportsmen, religious, atheist….. The terms should tell things young people might identify with or belong to. After choosing the labels you can build small groups with common interests or belongings and discuss with the part. what it means to them to be like this or to belong to this social group. Some of the part. can read loudly to the others, what they have chosen.
Step 3) A power point slide show asks 25 questions like: “If you were a flower, what kind of flower would you prefer to be?, “If you were a building, what building….” If you were a book, what book…” and so on. Part. have a list with 25 lines and answer the questions by filling in the list. After the last question part. are invited to read their choices loudly.
Step 4) Part. decorate a small white paper bag (I can show you examples from practising this tool) as if it was their “alter ego”. They can paint or cut or stick things both to the inner and the outside. The aim is to show different aspects of themselves without using words. If a part. doesn`t want to show what`s his/her inner side, he/she is allowed to hide it away by sticking together the two sides of the paper bag. The creations are presented as a small exhibition. The bag should not show the names of the part. so that the others might guess to whom they belong.

Materials and resources: 

-labels, on which they can read terms like: son, daughter, swimmer, biker, babysitter, heterosexual, bisexual, outdoor fan, online player, sportsmen, religious, atheist….. (I can bring the Labels with me)
-beamer an Notebook for Power-Point-Presentation
-small paper bags (I can bring them)
-materials for creative works like pencils, stickers, old magazines (for Collage),....

Outcomes: 

-participants have more nuanced ideas of their own identity
-part. learn to know themselves better
-part. realize that they belong to various social Groups, not only to their ethnic community
-part. learn to listen to themselves, follow their own imaginations
-part. can express themselves in a more nuanced way

Evaluation: 

Advantages: Participants like to have questions and fantasies about themselves. They fancy the tool. It also allowes them to show aspects of themselves, if if they are week with expressing themselves. To create their "paper bag-ego" is funny for them because they can express themselves without searching for the right Terms.

Limits: It would Need many more such oder similar Actions to really make them more conscious about themselves especially if they hae attitudes of nationalism or radicalism.

Notes for further use: 

I´d like to test the tool with participants of TOOLS FAIR. This will last about 2 hours.

I used the tool already 3 times with Young peoople in educational setting.

I work with disadvantaged youth in different areas and the identity topic is always a challenge.
During the workshop, I was able to combine methods of the presenter and ideas from participants to come up with a new tool
